i have been posting asian resto reviews to tellmewhere.com

eg, eating in china (read not SAR HK n Macau) ... Eat local chinese veg dishes....  vegans delight! ... but meat is shit... they don't have any ... too many people not enough... 'food' ..... if u go don't eat western food... deep fried everything, and stay away from meat... u may get frog if lucky..... lol....

Rick Stein's Travel Shows......

After watching the latest one of Rick Stein's travel show, vietnam i think, i have lost a lot of respect for the guy... he does not try unusual things and have this caucasian attitude to eating things like bears, snakes or other cutesy animals, like dog, etc..... I can't see a person like that being adventurous... I suppose he was the predecessor of bourdain, so I must say when I was in canada, I respected a lot of his travels, cooking, recipes and perspectives. of course nowadays, i don't share the opinions and perspectives... so ..... can't see liking his show.. he is just some stuffy brit with a high and mighty supercilious attitude... and everything is 'just so good and delicious' only if it fits in with his idea of what is good and tasty.... crap......

'the thai people are so small!' and comments like that make me dislike this guy even more..... and that 'pho' is the national dish of vietnam shows how little he understands the local cultures..... i thought he was a new yorker, but guess he is a brit... and so anachronistic and racist, narrow in perspective, ... chef wan was on his show on thailand as well... lol... he was also on a bourdain show.... i would have to question his motives.....

he stayed/cooked at the majestic hotel, where we were.... lol.... with chef wan who basically ran all over his stuffy style.... shame..... stodgy and unable to laugh at himself... vs tony bourdain who may be because he is american, has a much lighter view of life.... humor and laughter is still the best way to go.... takes himself too seriously....  represents everything i hate about life..... wow that is quite a condemnation... i should lighten it up.... lol .....

where i comment these days...

I make my comments on HK restos on 'TellMeWhere' .. an app on android, apparently started by some french canadians, presumably from montreal, who like to 'eat the east' ..... I don't find too much of an audience, and use it mainly as a record of my opinions on HK restos.

Latitude 22 Hong Kong

My due diligence... Lat 22 + is a famous restaurant with gringos in Mexico! it is called latitude 22 + roadhouse and the likes of american artists and musicians used to go south.. and when they passed south of latitude 22 they came to a wonderful roadhouse with great sea views, and wonderful break from the travel south.. good hospitality and wonderful mexican and american (omg) food! and we know Mexico or the US have no real food! ... lol ....

The one in hong kong is someone's attempt at a tapas effort, with good sangria (cheap red gringo red wine), with an effort at nouveau prices for small plates of HK's attempt at spanish food, consisting of expensive black pig ham (iberico), greasy shrimps, chorizo (sausages) no one would eat anywhere else, and somewhere, they try to bring in some interesting ingredients, like white anchovies... etc.... anyway i have set expectations ...

The resto is too new to even have 'open rice' reviews...... no real reviews... from anyone HK and some gwailos on trip advisor, foursquare, ... which are useless reviews...... so I would have no idea from anything that is on the net re Lat 22 HK. Let see what I have to say after we try.... It does sound like a great idea in Lan Kwai Fong though, to have a bunch of real tapas places to bar hop! BUT ....

The concept of tapas, I repeat, is to travel from one place to another, cover 3 tapas joints over an evening, having between 3 - 4 people, only one tapas at each resto and drinking one glass of red wine.... how do u think that compares with the way it works in HK above? usually partaking in the best dish in the house, like sardines perhaps at the first, potatoes at the second, and xxx at the third... if two people gets a pot of sangria and 6-8 tapas, we are then lost?

Ding or Din Tai Fung.

Ding or Din Tai Fung.

Markham, Ont.  2012 04 22

If the spelling error is intentional, then that would explain the discrepancy in taste of the xiao lung bao (xlb) here and the din tai fung in Taiwan, the original, and the ones in Hong Kong.

The xlb in the Taiwan stores are drop dead great! Hong Kong slightly farther away. But the ones here although good, are only passable compared to the ones in Asia. The taste is quite off and the soup is too hot. A perfect bun/dumpling should be eaten whole. No biting. If it burns, it is wrong. (Sounds sexual or sensual? intentional lol...)

All the other traditional stuff here is also very canadian-ized and good but not great... e.g., beef noodles (a Taipei classic), minced pork noodles, tan tan noodles, long beans, snow pea sprouts, chinese gyozi (pot stickers) ..... all getting to the poor level as we move down the scale...

And I remember coming here since the early 1990's, so... but had never been to the Taiwan and HK stores before, till recently. What u don't know ....

It was however still very good value compared to Asia, C$80 for 5 people! (standard in HK is C30 a person) .. but no booze here... no license? the real din tai fung would never have allowed that!

Din Tai Fung may just have to sue...... LA and Seattle appear to be the only two official north american locations!
